If You Build It They Will Come…Or Will They?

If you build it - Blog posting strategy

Contemplating a smart blog post, these two sayings popped into my head:

  1. If you build it they will come.
  2. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

And here is how these relate to my daily work:
It seems pretty obvious that if we, say, build a basketball arena and have a good team the crowds will come to watch the games, right Seattle? Or, as another example, if I have a great product and I get a beautiful website, people will come to my site and buy my product. Or, if I write a really smart blog post here, people will flock to my site and I will become famous. Well, that’s where my second thought comes in.

In all three examples, we have an existing product (team, product, blog post), which becomes our falling tree. Only the basketball team has the existing crowd to witness what is happening. We could call it critical mass. The product for sale and my blog might have some customers, but without a strategy and work, they will fall alone and we never hear (about) them. That’s why it is vitally important to look at the big picture and create a comprehensive strategy from start to finish.

Once a strategy is developed (including goals, targets, etc.) it’s appropriate to look at the different medias that will make up a proper marketing mix. These are the vibrations traveling through the air to reach your target audience. The marketing mix grows the customer base and builds around your product or service, bringing both sides together. Through work and endurance you can build forests and there will always be someone to witness when things fall into place. Pun intended.
